Moon Flowers

This was my last painting before I realised my recent frenetic creative period had ended. As I said in my previous post I was sort of burnt out and needed to step back before undertaking another painting.
This was an opportunity to clear and clean my studio which quite frankly had become a tip! Having done that I feel ready ( almost ) to start painting again.

Meanwhile here is a recent poem of mine. It is called ' Grey '

A cold wind moves the grey pines
My heart whispers grey like the air
The illusion of independence vanishing
crushed on the grey rocks of reality
The shattered dust of delusion
reforming in glorious yellow

My next painting will be glorious yellow.

Burnt Out

I have been on a roll with my painting lately but have suddenly hit a brick wall. I completed two paintings at my art group yesterday, one being the abstract shown, but now feel somewhat drained. I have just taken delivery of some very large canvases which is exciting but will wait until inspiration returns rather than paint for the sake of it.

Perhaps I will write some poetry instead?

Lycopene Tomatoes and Cancer

We are told that the Lycopene in tomatoes is a protection against cancer but did you know just looking at them stimulates the immune system? That being the case this painting must be a good investment.

Selling a Dream

Another departure from my usual style. Could this be used for an advert to sell a villa in the sun? Picture yourself sitting on this terrace with your gin and tonic enjoying the view across the valley towards the distant mountains.I invite advertising agencies to contact me with a lucrative offer.

Old Olive Tree

This painting is a departure from my usual subjects. I am not sure if it works?

However it might make a good home for a Hobbit!

It is 40cm x 30cm

Ghost in the Forest

I have revisited this painting. I was quite pleased with it but had the nagging feeling that it was asking for something to appear in the space between the trees. It seemed as if the space was wreathed in mist so I added a ghostly and unreal apparition. Not too sure if it worked. What do you think! All opinions are valued so don't be afraid to express criticism. Thankyou.  www.chrisgauntartist.co.uk

The Path in Spring

Why is it I am always painting paths, tracks, roads or things that lead to some undefined place. I will leave you to draw your own conclusions! Whatever the reason I so enjoyed painting ' The Path in Autumn ' ( now sold ) I decided to paint this painting ' The Path in Spring ' The size is 40cm x 30cm and is framed and mounted. The frame size is 54cm x 44cm. If you are interested in buying this painting contact me through my web site www.chrisgauntartist.co.uk  to make an offer before it is officially uploaded to the above site.

Stream of Consciousness

I haven't given up on representational paintings but at the moment I am enjoying this type of free flowing watercolour painting. Essentially paint is dropped onto a wet paper and as it spreads out some sort of form usually suggests itself to me. Then with a few brush strokes before the paper has dried it is possible to create an image. This image may be interpreted by each viewer as something different. What do you see here?

The painting is 40cm x 30cm If you are interested in buying this painting please contact me. www.chrisgauntartist.co.uk

Eckhart Tolle and the Confucius Duck

I was dipping into ' The Power of Now ' by Eckhart Tolle the other night, many years after first reading it. I don't know if it is my age or just that I am looking at it from a Buddhist perspective but I found myself becoming a bit irritated. There is something about these new age gurus that increasingly strikes me as somewhat smug. So many of them are just regurgitating and repackaging old wisdom. Perhaps it has always been thus? If it gets each new audience to look at these things then it does indeed have a purpose. I was talking to a man who had just joined our meditation group. He was an expert in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and he had just realised how much CBT owes to the Buddhist understanding of the human mind!
Anyway as any one who has ever read my blog knows, I myself think animals, birds and nature anchor us in ' The Now ' I was therefore pleased to agree with Eckhart when he wrote that he had lived with several Zen Masters, all of them cats! He then went on to write about ducks and the spiritual lesson they give. The lesson being that even when their serenity is interrupted by a brief squabble they just flap their wings and sail serenely on as if nothing had happen. In other words they do not hold onto negativity and resentment about the fight and continue to live in the now. The picture is of  Mandarin Ducks so being Chinese they perhaps are followers of Confucius. They could also be Buddhist ducks but either way they were very serene.

The Path

Do any of us really know where we are going? No matter it is the journey that we cannot help making. It does help however if we try to journey mindfully and with a positive outlook. This picture tries to capture the love between parent and child as they enjoy being in beautiful surroundings, content to walk together in a precious shared moment. Little journeys can be just as profound as exciting long adventures. This picture is 40cm x 30cm and is for sale. Along with several recent paintings it is not yet on my website. The price will be £300.00 fully mounted and framed when it is uploaded or in the immediate future may be purchased unframed for £150.00. If interested please contact me at chrisgaunt3@hotmail.com

Fleeing the Fire.

I was inspired to paint this picture by a photo taken at a festival in Spain. It was so dramatic. A Horse and Rider emerging from a blazing fire. The painting is 40cm x 30cm and was mostly painted in watercolour. The background was painted in Lemon Yellow, allowed to dry before spraying with a little water into which I dropped or brushed Cadmium Red and a mixture of Light Red and Ultramarine. After drying the Horse and Rider was painted in acrylic using Burnt Sienna and a mixture of Light Red and Ultramarine.

Spiritual Guide

Every morning when I leave my studio there is a Sparrow sitting on the gutter above. He always sits next to the grass growing out of the blocked downpipe. Always he chirps and looks down at me. He seems so cheerful and even as I scraped the ice from my car this morning I felt he was sent to keep my spirits up. Indeed I think he is my higher spirit.I feel great love for this little bird.

Unicorn in the Forest

Here is another Taoist free flowing painting. This one painted it self, almost like an early morning meditation in which thoughts arise from the subconscious. The paint flowed into a form and the form suggested some detail to me. It was like a sentence from The Heart Sutra ' Form is only emptiness, emptiness only form ' It was painted in three stages. The background colours of Permanent Rose, Lemon Yellow, Windsor Blue, Windsor Red or mixtures of were washed on. After drying the paper was wet with a spray and stronger colours were added and left to flow and dry. Then the detail added in Paynes Grey, Ultramarine and Titanium White. Finaly a spatter wash was added. If you are interested in buying this painting please contact me. My other art work can be viewed at www.chrisgauntartist.co.uk

France begins in Yorkshire

Yorkshire the county of my birth, now the starting point for the Tour de France! Is this another sign of globalisation or a gesture of admiration for Bradley Wiggins? I know the Tour has started in England before but it does seem strange that a French Tour should include another country! Surely France is big enough? Nevertheless we are in for a treat as the Tour runs through the marvelous Yorkshire Dales taking in beauty spots such as Kettlewell and Reeth. Just typing the words triggers waves of nostalgia as I sit in exile in the north of Scotland. When French viewers see the wonderful countryside of Yorkshire we can expect a flood of French escapees from the new high tax regime in France. Yorkshire pub food will now include Cog au Vin with Yorkshire Pudding on the side. It's enough to make me want to move back myself.

Taoist Painting.

Another experimental water colour and acrylic painting. I am trying to go with the flow in a Taoist way. I allow the colours to flow and make shapes and then add a little detail with acrylics when the watercolour is dry. I used Lemon Yellow, Sap Green, Winsor Red and Windsor Blue or mixtures of them to create the base. Acrylics used were Paynes Grey, Ultramarine and Titanium White. It is quite exciting because it is unpredictable and I think my next few pictures will use this system.

Still Seeking Spiritual Answers.

A very lovely man died today. Reg Dean age 110 passed away today. He was much loved and according to people who knew him well, spent his whole life helping others. Always kind, he looked for the best in people.
In a remarkable interview on his 109th birthday he said there are three questions to ask in life.
1. Who am I.
2. Why am I here.
3. Where am I going.
He then said ' I am afraid I don't know the answer ' Pausing for dramatic effect he continued ' to any of them '
Perhaps the spiritual answer to a long life is a sense of humour!

Wallace and Gromit. A Matter of Loaf and Death.

Feeling blue? Here is the answer. I have just bought for only £6.00 The Complete Collection of Wallace and Gromit. I just love this humour ( although it may be a bit too British for our American cousins ) and if you still feel blue after watching it, well maybe see your doctor!

My favourite is ' A Matter of Loaf or Death ' although ' A Close Shave ' is a strong contender. They are all great.

Do you like Wallace and Gromit?

Great Pecs ( or should that be Nice Pecks )

Blue Cockerel by Chris Gaunt.
Do you buy eggs from the Happy Egg Company? This is an ' ethical egg producer ' and according to Metro, a London paper sent to me by a friend, they go the extra mile to keep their hens happy!

So much so they have produced a calendar especially for them. Called ' Nice Pecks ' It features 12 alluring cockerels in various seductive poses. Apparently they were selected from over 100 cockerels and photographed by a fashion photographer!

Hens are very visual creatures and are said to feel calmer and safer in the presence of cockerels. The calendars are being given to farms and smallholders.
If any human out there can't get one of these super calendars why not buy one of my chicken prints or originals instead? www.chrisgauntartist.co.uk

Candles for Family and Friends.

Today is the last day of 2012. During my morning meditation I was very strongly drawn to light candles for my family and friends. My family and friends are very scattered but are so important to me. I resolve to see more of my scattered friends and family in 2013.
To all my family and friends I send my love and thoughts to you. I wish nothing but the best for you and that 2013 will be wonderful. I give thanks to all for being in my life, you make it rich for me.

To anyone else who may stumble across this blog I also wish the best for you. Also I express hope that the suffering and war in this world will grow less.

Christmas Chicken

This photo of my latest painting does not do the colours justice. The original is much more vivid, especially the yellow background.

Not my best work but then again this was done at our art groups last session before Christmas so the mulled wine probably had something to do with it!

Anyway Happy Christmas to all however you are spending it. Seems we survived the end of the world again. Let us all wish for peace in 2013.

Poetry with passion

Last Friday night I went to a poetry reading evening at The Picture Framers Art Gallery in Forres. The day before I had been in to see Graham about some picture framing and while waiting I picked up a poetry book by Eileen Carney Hulme. I read one, then another and just had to buy it.

The next night at the poetry evening (which was excellent) this lady was there and although she didn't read any of her work it seems she was mentoring some of the other poets. Anyway the following poem by Eileen Carney Hulme is a typical example of her work. Does it resonate with you?

Indian Summer

Like a deep blue wave
of passion
you shore into the room
where I sit waiting quietly,
open-booked.

We have moved through days,
loss, pain
to hold this moment,
this picture postcard seascape
of gentle harbouring.

You say
'I knew you were here
I could smell you'
and effortlessly I sway
to seal my fate.

You taste of ocean,
avenues of grassy dunes,
like a magician
you pluck a tiny pebble
from my hair-

Ancient survivor, sun kissed
on this summer afternoon,
unconditionally
I step out of my dress
into your dream.

Cleaning up

It could change of course but my 20 month old granddaughter shows no sign of wanting to be an investment banker.

She loves cleaning and tidying things up, putting books into nice neat piles. In short she seems to be planning a career as a  housewife!

Did your children show signs of their future path?

Eilean Donan Castle. Scotland

This is my painting of Eilean Donan Castle as you have never seen it before ( and perhaps not again ) but I was feeling rather crazy during the week.
This is the result.
I have painted this most famous much painted and photographed castle in Scotland twice before but only with a more conventional style.
Much to my surprise my crazy and abandoned brush strokes came together to form this painting. I quite like it.
Maybe Vincent Van Gogh was onto something being mad!

What do you think?
Would you buy this?
Size 39cm x 30cm Acrylic.

Paradise Road

I was close to a magical paradise when I saw these beautiful trees in their full autumn glory. This is my second attempt to paint this subject. It is not exact but I tried to capture the spirit and essence of my feelings and the trees.

It is quite different to the previous one ( see the other a few posts back ) but that is what happens.
The painting takes on a life of it's own and you, the artist, are merely a bit player in the process.
Why is this?
What does it mean?

Famous Findhorn Community

Up here in the far north of Scotland I live close to the Findhorn Foundation. Depending on your point of view, hearsay or actual experience it is regarded as wonderful, weird, false, authentic, empty, inspirational and many other positive and negatives. Whatever your point of view it has survived 50 years and this week is celebrating the fact. See what the BBC has to say about it.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-north-east-orkney-shetland-20358557

I myself volunteer once a week in one of the gardens for a morning work shift for which I get a free meal and lots of interesting chats. What is my opinion of The Foundation?

Emptiness

Amoghasiddhi. Buddha of the North.
After over 30 years of sporadically studying and practising Buddhism I finally get it!

I know nothing, that is enough.

Does this mean I am enlightened?

Open Heart

I was reading a book someone gave me recently. It is full of wisdom but one short passage made me think about the hearts response to emotional pain. I think it is true to say that for most of us the default response is to close down to protect ourselves. However I think the passage I mentioned and quote below is a more skillful and healing way to deal with it.

" Closing down in the midst of pain is a denial of mans true nature. A evolved man is free in feeling and action, even in the midst of great pain and hurt. If necessary a man should live with a hurting heart rather than a closed one. He should learn to stay in the wound of pain and act with spontaneous skill and love even from that place."

Autumn Road

This painting was inspired by the extraordinary colours this autumn. It is mixed media and I used only five colours. Lemon Yellow and Cadmium Red watercolours and Light Red, Paynes Grey acrylics. Oh and a little White acrylic also.
The size is 47cm x 35cm and will be available to buy. It will be a nice reminder of the warm autumn colours as winter changes this scene to more sombre tones.

Boris Johnson for President

Boris Johnson Piccadilly Circus Circus
Since the very successful London Olympics the already high profile of London Mayor Boris Johnson has soared even higher than his own ego.

His name is increasingly mentioned as a future Prime minister. Everybody loves his jokes, his optimism, his charisma, his charm and his political incorrectness.

He is a breath of fresh air in a world of dull politicians and doom and gloom. No wonder Conservative leaders are worried as his appeal crosses party political lines.

However there is no need to worry for behind the cultivated buffoonery there is a razor sharp mind and a gigantic ambition. Did you know Boris was born in New York and therefore why should he not leap frog Downing Street and run for President of the United States of America?

Are you a fan of Boris?

Bluebell Wood

This painting was started in May and I have just completed it. I sat in this lovely bluebell wood only half a mile from a very busy Hawkshead in The English Lake District. I was completely alone for the entire painting session.

It is mixed media. Watercolour and acrylic and the size is 40cm x 30cm

Rivers in Flood. Spate of Sales too.

Flooded Meadow
The rivers here in Scotland have been in spate after the worst storm for 30 years.

I have had a spate of sales too! I sold two framed prints which were on display in The Basil Harbour Cafe, Nairn. One large print of Black Rock Cottage, Glencoe and one standard size print of Flooded Meadow.
From The Picture Framers Gallery in Forres a large original of Flooded Meadow 2 was sold.

Also three prints on line. Eilean Donan Castle 1 and Eilean Donan Castle 2 and Black Rock Cottage again.

In reality most artists like myself do not make much money from art but it is nice to think some people like your work enough to buy it.

Scottish Cycle Tour

The Team T Shirts
As always when we get together for a cycle ride things don't go as smoothly as we would wish!

Roger had to drop out at the last moment and the other three travelled up to Scotland at the precise moment the worst September storm for thirty years struck Great Britain. John left Norwich on the 25th but couldn't get to Edinburgh by the usual route due to flooding and was diverted to Birmingham, then Crewe where after a long wait he got the sleeper train from London. Finally arriving on the 26th! Peter and Terry both had delays and route changes but did make it in one extremely long day.
Terry came with 5 T Shirts printed with the slogan ' The Gerry Active Tour of Scotland 2012 ' So off we went proudly wearing our T Shirts. The first day was a forty mile ride to Aviemore and stopping for lunch at Grantown on Spey we had a request to join our club by a fellow diner. We had to turn him down as he was far too young and looked exceedingly fit! Not that we are ageist or anything like that!
Yes the T Shirts were real ice breakers. We were asked questions by a South African man in Aviemore and a lady in Nairn both of whom were connected with promoting cycling. The second day was another forty mile day to Craigellachie, a splendid ride along and above the river Spey. The next leg took us past The Glenfiddic Distillery where three Gerry Active members took a tasting tour, emerging one hour later considerably fortified and looking less geriatric. All in all we had quite good weather and enjoyed six days cycling and great camaraderie.
Got the T Shirt
